2025 Lagos Fanti Carnival

The 2025 Lagos Fanti Carnival is one for the books, one to truly remember. The colorful lively event which celebrates deep roots, rich culture, and strong community bonds between Nigeria and Brazil was brought back on the street of lagos, from the music and fashion to the engagement and performances, the carnival serves as a bridge, reconnecting the long-standing ties between Lagos, Nigeria, and Brazil. 

This year’s celebration brought Afro-Brazilian heritage style to the streets of Lagos in the most unforgettable way with vibrant colors thay catches the eyes and lit up the roads, energetic performances from both young and old filling up the air, and the spirit of unity being felt.

After a break in previous years on the carnivak celebration, the 2025 carnival didn’t just return, it came back bigger, better, and stronger. Held on Easter Sunday at TSB Lagos, the event drew crowds from all over Lagos  and beyond, including visitors from overseas. True to its original purpose, the carnival honored the Yoruba identity, resilience, and heritage while also celebrating the shared history and way of life with Afro-Brazilians who have returned to their roots. The carnival ground  atmosphere was electric, blending bold fashion, cultural music, mainstream sounds, and a beautiful display of shared traditions all over the street.

The success of this year’s carnival was made possible by the strong support of the Lagos State Government and the State commissioner for art and culture, both of which invested resources and time to ensure a smooth return of the carnival. The commissioner of art and culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka shared positive remarks about the festival’s impact, on Arise The Morning show, praising its role in promoting culture, tourism, while also sharing brief history of how the Fanti Carnival came to come in place and how it is a bit isolated to Lagos island and the firm need for the lagos state government to keep the carnival active annually.

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, also played a big part, not only did he attend, but also  celebrated alongside with the crowd, even taking a turn as a DJ at a point, showcasing the feeling of celebration, music and unity with the people.

Looking ahead, the Fanti Carnival is set to become one of Nigeria’s most exciting festivals, attracting tourists from around the world creating job opportunities for sales fair during the carnival. With 2025’s success it already stands alongside other major cultural events in Nigeria like the Ogun State’s Ojude Oba Festival, which went viral in 2024 and more. 

Attendees of this year’s Fanti carnival include Desmond Elliot, Adekunle Gold.

Beyond being a top tourism attraction, the carnival also helps strengthen Nigeria’s relationship with Brazil, opening doors for trade, cultural exchange, and deeper connections. With its grand return, the Fanti Carnival is on its way to becoming one of the best festivals not just in Nigeria, but in all of Africa.
