Interlude: The Artist is a multitalented creative who makes music and graphic design; recently, he delved into fashion. He works with London-based Fashion house Prayr Studios to make multipurpose clothing and fashion accessories.
Who is Interlude, the Artist?
Interlude, the artist: Interlude is just a simple guy doing simple things: designer, musician, academic, photographer, jack of all trades, basically. đ
What would you say you enjoy making the most: music, fashion accessories, photography, or designs?
Interlude, the artist: It has to be fashion design; thereâs just something about the process of designing a piece actually to seeing it come to life and in your handsÂ
Letâs talk about your music. How did it begin?
Interlude, the artist: Since I was in secondary school, I knew I wanted to make music, but I didnât get into the studio until my first year in university, 2017/2018. My roommate was a musician, so I went with him to the studio and recorded my first song.Â
Your last body of work was released in 2023; when would the hiatus end?
Interlude, the artist: I canât even lie; I have no idea. I havenât recorded a song in months, and I have a couple of features coming out this year, but I donât think Iâm personally dropping, at least not anytime soon.Â
Whatâs the process behind your art generally?
Interlude, the artist: I think about what I want to make: flyers, cover art, and clothes. I think of the themes I want to surround it, then I hop on Pinterest or Behance and search keywords relating to those themes; after minutes of scrolling, I get a general idea of the direction I want it to go in, and I open photoshop, and the rest is chickenÂ
You entered the Ashluxe 5th anniversary competition. What was it like finishing in the top 2 positions?
Interlude, the artist: Unreal scenes. It all happened quickly, from finding out I was a finalist to booking my flight from Abuja that same day to getting to Lagos for the interview. It was all a blur, but I canât help but be grateful for the opportunity.Â
Regarding your work with Prayr Studios, letâs discuss the multipurpose belt. How did that come about?
Interlude, the artist: It was so crazy that Daniel (the owner of Prayr) called me one evening and said, âWe have to make the hardest belt ever. ” Thatâs all it took. I remember sending him an ASAP Rocky buckle as a reference. We wanted it to be functional and in tune with the brand. One long Facetime call later, we had envisioned what we knew would be such a hard belt.Â
How long have you been working with Prayr Studios?
Interlude, the artist: I started working with Prayr in 2022. Daniel saw a flyer I made and hit me up, âBro, I believe in you die; come and join my team.â 3 years later, I’m the creative director; I wouldnât have it any other wayÂ
Prayr Studios had a pop-up on the 23rd of February; tell us how that went.Â
Interlude, the artist: It was amazing to see so many people show love for pieces that I was involved in designing, especially in another country. It put the biggest smile on my face and a lot more wind in my sailsÂ
How are you combining making clothes with your Master’s studies in Molecular Genetics?
Interlude, the artist: I wonât lie to anyone and say itâs not hard. Itâs exhausting, but there are so many people to impact, so much money to be made. Canât stop, wonât stop.Â
What fashion house or designer do you dream of collaborating with?
Interlude, the artist: It has to be Loewe. My goodness! I donât care if I die trying; I must work with Loewe and a better world. Anyone seeing this and can make it happen, hit me up đÂ
What field do you see yourself dominating in the next few years, music or fashion?
Interlude, the artist: Fashion. Iâve found that I resonate more with fashion than with music. Donât get me wrong, I love making music, but when designing, the feeling is so different.Â
