WNBA Golden State Names Ghanaian-American Ohemaa Nyanin as General Manager

WNBA Golden State appointed Ohemaa Nyanin as their new general manager. The Ghanaian-American was tasked on May 6th, 2024 with the responsibilities of all aspects of basketball operations including player growth, team development, and roster management. 

Before joining Golden State, Nyanin had been at the New York Liberty for five years holding pivotal positions including being the team’s assistant general manager.

Prior to her time in the WNBA, Nyanin played basketball at American University. As a freshman, she played three seasons with the Eagles. After skipping three seasons, she returned to the court in her senior year, playing from the 31st of the 32nd games played that season. After graduating from American University in 2010, she returned the following year to be appointed as the Head of  Basketball Operations.

Nyanin then continued to serve as the assistant director of the women’s national team at USA Basketball for five years, playing a crucial part in securing gold medals for the team at the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2018 World Cup in Spain.

Nyanin’s role marks the first addition to the front office as WNBA Golden State prepares for its debut in the league in 2025, with more hirings expected to follow.

I look forward to joining this franchise and building a competitive basketball team that the fans deserve.” She said during a press conference.

New York Liberty’s general manager, Johnathan Kolb believes that with Ohemaa Nyanin’s appointment, the Golden State has gotten brighter.

As she reports directly to the co-executive chairman and CEO of Warriors, she is expected to resume office in the coming week.
