The 67th Grammy Awards ceremony recently concluded, with Tems winning the Best African Music Performance for her hit song “Love Me Jeje.” This makes her the second person and woman to win in this category, following Tyla, who won in 2024 for her song “Water.” The category was introduced to the Grammys in 2023.
Tems delivered a heartfelt acceptance speech, expressing gratitude for her journey and the support she received.
“Dear God, thank you so much for putting me on this stage and bringing me this team. Tomorrow is my mum’s birthday, and this is her first Grammys. I just want to thank you, mum, because she’s really done a lot for me and my brother. I want to thank my team—thank you so much. To God be the glory, because honestly, He’s changed my life so much. Thank you so much, thank you God.”
This win makes Tems the most awarded Nigerian artist as a lead artist on a song, with two wins: “Wait For U” in 2023 and “Love Me Jeje” in 2024.
Wizkid and Bloody Civilian’s contribution to the Bob Marley: One Love – Music Inspired by the Film (Deluxe) by Various Artists also won a Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album, making them eligible for Grammy Award certificate.
Despite this win, Tems was nominated for two other Grammy Awards but did not win: Best R&B Performance and Best Global Music Album for her album Born In The Wild.
Other Nigerian artists, including Rema (for HEIS), Burna Boy (for Higher), Chris Brown, Davido & Lojay (for “Sensational”), Asake & Wizkid (for “MMS”), and Yemi Alade (for Tomorrow), were also nominated in various categories but did not win.
Nigerian artists made a strong fashion statement at the 67th Grammy Awards. Yemi Alade stunned in a traditional attire, Asake sported a military-inspired look, Lojay debuted a new hairstyle, Rema looked stylishly simple, and Tems wore a magnificent golden attire.
Red carpet interviews were conducted with Rema and Asake. Rema discussed his latest album, HEIS, and its creative process, saying, “For this last album, it was more about recognizing the foundation of the sound that changed my life.”
Asake also spoke about the meaning behind “MMS,” his Grammy-nominated song, saying, “It is me telling my story. That is the summary of the song. It is just me telling my story. I came from grass to grace; that is all about the song…shout out to Big Wiz, God bless you.”
