Nigerian shot putter Chukwuebuka Enekwechi delivered an impressive performance at the 2025 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China, securing a fifth-place finish in the men’s shot put final on Sunday. Enekwechi, Nigeria’s sole representative at the championship, achieved a season’s best throw of 21.25 meters, marking his highest placement in a global championship to date.

The competition was fierce, with New Zealand’s Tom Walsh clinching the gold medal with a throw of 21.65 meters. He was closely followed by the USA’s Roger Steen, who took silver with a throw of 21.62 meters, and Adrian Piperi, also from the USA, who secured bronze with a mark of 21.48 meters.
Chukwuebuka Enekwechi’s participation was particularly noteworthy as he was the only Nigerian athlete to compete in Nanjing. The Athletics Federation of Nigeria faced challenges in arranging visas and tickets for nine other athletes who were initially registered for the event.

This achievement adds to Enekwechi’s growing list of accolades. Born on January 28, 1993, he has previously reached finals in multiple competitions and holds multiple shotput records locally and continentally.
Chukwuebuka Enekwechi’s performance underscores his resilience and dedication, highlighting Nigeria’s potential in field events. With continued support and investment, performances like his could pave the way for future success on the global stage.
