The Flying Eagles of Nigeria booked their place in the semi-finals of the 2025 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations and, by extension, sealed qualification for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile after a dramatic quarter-final victory over defending champions Senegal on Monday, May 12, 2025.  A tense 120 minutes at the Cairo International Stadium ended goalless, but Nigeria emerged 3–1 winners in the ensuing penalty shootout, showcasing composure and clinical finishing when it mattered most.

The quarter-final clash was a masterclass in defensive organization, with both sides largely cancelling each other out through two periods of extra time. Senegal threatened on several occasions, but Nigeria’s backline, marshaled by captain Ibrahim Usman, remained resolute. When the match went to penalties, goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt rose to the occasion, producing two crucial saves to secure the Flying Eagles’ passage to the last four and, importantly, a ticket to Chile 2025

By reaching the semi-finals, Nigeria have extended their remarkable record in the competition, where they have already lifted the trophy seven times—the most by any nation. The Flying Eagles now chase an eighth title as they prepare for their last-four encounter. Moreover, qualification for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup marks a vital milestone for a squad brimming with potential and eager to make their mark on the global stage.

South Africa earned their spot by edging DR Congo 2–1 in an extra-time thriller.
