The episode features Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, who, alongside his companion Belinda Chandra (played by Varada Sethu), navigates the vibrant streets of Lagos. They encounter a mysterious barber, portrayed by Ariyon Bakare, whose character draws inspiration from West African folklore figures like Anansi and biblical tales such as Samson.

Written by Nigerian-British playwright Inua Ellams, known for his acclaimed play Barber Shop Chronicles, the episode delves into themes of identity, displacement, and the power of storytelling. Ellams expressed that setting the story in Lagos was a personal journey, aiming to showcase the city’s uniqueness.

Although the episode is set in Lagos, filming took place at Wolf Studios in Cardiff, Wales, with authentic Nigerian market scenes recreated on set. Establishing drone shots were captured in Lagos to enhance authenticity. The production team collaborated with Nigerian consultants to ensure accurate representation of sets, hairstyles, and languages.

The episode’s release has been met with enthusiasm from Nigerian fans. “The Story & the Engine” marks a significant step in diversifying the Doctor Who universe while celebrating Nigerian culture and storytelling.
