Mohamed Salah had an iconic 2024/2025 season, shattering countless records in the wake of his extraordinary brilliance. Salah’s exceptional form spearheaded Liverpool FC’s record-equalling Premier League triumph, as the Reds clinched a 20th top-flight title.
Arne Slot’s arrival at Liverpool last summer was shrouded in a cloud of uncertainty, as fans and players alike were divided on the abilities of the Dutch Coach who replaced Jürgen Klopp. A herculean task lay ahead of the Dutch coach as he was tasked with sustaining Liverpool’s identity as one of the best teams in the world. Questions were asked about how he would seamlessly fit each player into his system.
Mohamed Salah, one of the best players, if not the best of the Klopp era, was in the final year of his contract at the start of the 2024/2025 season, and exit rumours swirled around him continuously. Seeing how Slot planned to get the best out of Liverpool’s best player was intriguing.
Slot tweaked Salah’s role slightly at the start of the season, with greater concentration targeted at improving his effectiveness in the final third, and he stepped up heroically as the change brought immeasurable dividends for Liverpool. Slot’s tweak allowed him to drop into the pocket of spaces or drift centrally, having runners overlapping him and charging into the box, allowing him to maximise his creative touch. The Reds witnessed a shift from Klopp’s heavy-metal counter-pressing style to Slot’s possession-focused style, albeit with numerous similarities in both play styles.
True to his nature, he kick-started the Premier League season with a goal and an assist against Ipswich Town, shattering the record for most Premier League opening-day goals. He has been Liverpool’s man for the most significant occasions since he arrived in Merseyside. He displayed his knack for getting The Reds out of trouble with late goals against Arsenal and Southampton to keep their title charge on track. His goals led them to victory against Manchester City and Newcastle United.
Following his match-winning heroics against Newcastle, he became the first Premier League player to score and assist in 37 separate matches, overtaking Wayne Rooney’s tally of 36. A ten-star performance against Tottenham in December with two goals and two assists sent a message that the winger was in the form of his life, surpassing his previous peaks and cementing himself as the world’s best player.
Highlighting his impeccable form, he became the first Premier League player in history to reach double digits in both goals and assists before Christmas with 15 goals and 11 assists, rewriting the record for most goal involvements by a player in a single month. Against West Ham in the Reds’ final game of 2024, he set a new record for the fewest games to record 30 goal involvements. In February, Salah became the first player to notch at least 15 goals away from home in the same season, ending with 16. His goal against Tottenham helped confirm the Reds’ status as Premier League Champions as they clinched the title at home with a resounding victory against Spurs.
The winger evolved into a much more complete forward this season, making it harder for opposition defenders to stop him. He notched 34 goals and 23 assists across 52 games in all competitions, registering 29 goals and 18 assists in the Premier League. In a 38-game season, no player has recorded more. Notably, Alan Shearer and Andrew Cole only managed to record 47 goal involvements in a 42-game season, a stark contrast to Salah’s 38. Salah topped the goals and assists charts.
With 29 goals, he registered six more goals than second-placed Alexander Isak. No other player in the season’s top ten goalscorers recorded double figures in assists. Similarly, on the assists rankings, he recorded six more assists than the next-best player, Jacob Murphy. There has never been such a distant gap between the player with the highest goal contributions and the rest.
Salah excelled at creating and finishing goal-scoring chances, creating the league’s highest number of chances from open play, with 86, and the biggest chances (27) for his teammates. Barring the wastefulness of Luiz Diaz, Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, and Cody Gakpo, he should have broken Thierry Henry’s all-time assist record in the League.
With his outrageous numbers and Liverpool’s title triumph, it was only right that he made a clean sweep of all the league’s awards. The 32-year-old became the first player to complete the Golden Boot-Playmaker double twice, moving clear of Harry Kane.
Simultaneously, Salah became the first player in history to win the Golden Boot, Playmaker, and EA SPORTS Player of the Season awards in the same season. He joined Thierry Henry, Cristiano Ronaldo, Nemanja Vidic, and Kevin De Bruyne as the fifth player in Premier League history to win the Player of the Year award in multiple seasons. He has tied Thierry Henry’s golden boot record with four golden boots. Additionally, Salah clinched a record-equalling third Football Writers Association (FWA) Footballer of the Year award after receiving 90 percent of the vote from the FWA’s 918 eligible members, the biggest winning margin this century.
During the season, Salah surpassed Sergio Aguero as the foreign international with the highest number of goals in the English top flight. He cemented his position as the fifth-highest goalscorer in Premier League history and remains the only African in the top ten. With 186 goals, he goes into next season one goal behind fourth-placed Andrew Cole. If he surpasses the 27-goal mark next season, he would become the second-highest goal scorer in PL history behind Alan Shearer. He displaced David Beckham at the bottom of the top ten all-time assists ranking in December and sits comfortably in the tenth position. He is the only foreign international in the top ten on both rankings.
A professional on and off the pitch, Salah was at his athletic peak, staying fit throughout the season. For the first time in his Merseyside career, he started every league game for the Reds.
Salah’s jaw-dropping form for Liverpool saw him climb from sixth to third in Liverpool’s all-time goal scorers, trailing only club legends Ian Rush and Roger Hunt. An all-round winger, only five players have provided more assists than him in Liverpool’s history. Having surpassed the 20-goal mark this season, he became the first and only Liverpool player ever to score at least 20 goals in eight successive seasons.
The Egyptian was named Liverpool’s Standard Chartered Men’s Player of the Season for 2024–25, the fifth time he has received the award, a testament to his high levels of consistency. He was awarded the club’s Player of the Month award four times and the Player of the Match award 14 times in the 2024/2025 season.
The Egyptian winger indicated his desire at the start of the season was to show that he can perform superbly at the highest levels with a different coach and players, and he has justified it exceptionally. Unfortunately, Liverpool’s untimely exit from the Champions League ruled him out as the favorite for the Ballon d’Or award. An intense disappointment with his exceptional form.
Salah was one of the best players in the world this season and, by a mile, the best African player in Europe. No player recorded more goal involvements than he did across Europe’s top five leagues. His numbers are there for everyone to see!
