Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has confirmed that the city will host the E1 World Championship, the world’s first all-electric powerboat racing series, on October 4th and 5th, 2025. This makes Lagos the first African city to host an E1 race, joining global locations such as Monaco, Miami, and Dubai.

Speaking from Monaco where he attended the E1 race this past weekend, Governor Sanwo-Olu said the event is a powerful symbol of innovation, sustainability, and Lagos’s readiness to take its place on the world stage in clean energy and marine transport.

This is an opportunity to show the world what makes Lagos special, our culture, our energy, and our people,” the governor said. “We’re bringing a world-class sporting event to our shores.

The event is supported by Afreximbank, a key partner whose investment in Team Drogba, co-owned by football legend Didier Drogba, shows their commitment to African innovation and youth-focused opportunities. The E1 World Championship in Lagos is expected to include not only racing but also cultural showcases, business summits, and initiatives to highlight the city’s “blue economy” potential.

E1 CEO Rodi Basso described Lagos as “one of the world’s most exciting cities,” praising its bold vision for sustainable marine mobility. This complements the city’s recently launched €410 million “Omi Eko” inland waterway electrification project, which aims to deploy electric ferries, solar-powered terminals, and smart transport infrastructure.

Preparations are already underway to ensure the success of the October event, which is expected to attract international spectators, media, and investors to Lagos Lagoon.
