Over 68 years ago, something remarkable happened in Nigeria. It was the first time the country chose a Miss Nigeria. This was a huge moment for the whole country. It was a new way to celebrate beauty, elegance, and style. The big final event of this landmark pageant was held on April 5, 1957. The place was the Ikoyi Club in Lagos State. In those days, this was a significant and fancy club where big events happened.
The Daily Times newspaper created the pageant. Back then, the Daily Times was one of the country’s biggest and most important media companies. They created a contest to show off the amazing and diverse beauty of Nigerian women from all different regions and backgrounds. They wanted to find someone who represented the elegance and promise of a growing and changing nation.
On that historic night, young women, the finalists, came from every corner of the country. They had traveled to Lagos for this grand event. It was a night that would become a famous memory in Nigerian history. Among these finalists was a young woman named Grace Oyelude. Her life was about to change in a way she could never have imagined, and it all happened almost by mistake.

The twist in between this is that Grace never actually planned to be in the contest. The whole thing was a complete surprise to her. The story goes on to say that her brother, William Oyelude, was the one who saw an advertisement for the new Miss Nigeria competition. He looked at the ad and immediately thought of his sister. He believed she was beautiful and had the wonderful personality to do very well. So, without telling her, he took the brave step of filling out the forms and signing her up for the competition. Imagine Grace’s surprise when she finds out she has been entered. It was an unexpected opportunity that suddenly landed in her lap.
What began as this sudden and surprising chance soon turned into an authentic and remarkable journey. Grace went through the different stages of the contest. From that point, she moved from being just one of the many finalists to the incredible moment when she was crowned the very first Miss Nigeria. Winning this title was not just a personal triumph for her alone. It also brought a tremendous sense of pride and joy to her community and to the entire nation. People everywhere were happy to see such a graceful young woman win. Amongst the 12 finalists were Florence Osibodu, Bisi Awomugba, Crescentia Thompson, and Veronica Amee, who also participated in the competition.

The recognition and title of Miss Nigeria did not end with the party. It helped propel Grace Oyelude’s career and her biggest dreams for the future. As part of her prize, she received £200 in cash. This was a tremendous amount of money in 1957. She also received many other gifts. Instead of spending it all immediately, Grace made a brilliant decision. She used the money to travel to the United Kingdom to further her education. There, she pursued her studies to become a nurse. This opportunity was instrumental in shaping her entire future. It allowed her to learn skills that she used to contribute meaningfully to society and help others throughout her life.
Grace Oyelude’s remarkable story serves as a lasting reminder that sometimes in life, unexpected opportunities can lead to extraordinary journeys. She will always be remembered as the very first Miss Nigeria, inspiring future generations of young women to dream big and achieve even more than they can imagine.
