Continent of Champions: 25/26 Weekly Football Recap #7 

Another week of entertaining masterful performances from African footballers. Antoine Semenyo’s heroics, Adams’ clutch goal, Anguissa spearheaded Napoli’s fightback, Kofane’s superb display, and Martial Godo’s brace. We bring you all the action from African footballers across Europe in this latest weekly football recap episode.

RED-HOT SEMENYO FIRES BOURNEMOUTH TO VICTORY

Antoine Semenyo’s sparkling performance led Bournemouth to a memorable victory over Fulham FC at the Vitality Stadium. A drab first half ended on level terms as both sides struggled to create clear-cut chances. The game sprang to life after the restart, and goals flowed aplenty.

Ryan Sessegnon opened the scoring for Fulham on the stroke of the 70th minute, stunning the home fans into silence. Three minutes after his introduction, Samuel Chukwueze threaded a defence-splitting pass to Sessegnon, and the latter applied a sublime finish. An instant impact by the Nigerian winger! A goal down at home with the clock running out, Bournemouth’s man for the biggest occasions, Antoine Semenyo, rose to the occasion and singlehandedly overturned the course of the match.

Receiving a pass on the left wing, Semenyo did all the hard work. Charging into the opposition box, he skipped past one defender brilliantly before firing the ball through Bernd Leno’s legs from a tight angle, eight minutes after going behind. A sensational solo goal! Creating magic out of nothing. Lift off for Bournemouth!

Semenyo was at it once again, releasing a pass to Justin Kluivert, and the Dutchman drove at Fulham’s defence before dispatching a thunderbolt into the net in the 84th minute. Comeback complete! With two minutes to spare on the clock, Bournemouth unleashed a ruthless counterattack to annihilate Fulham. Ben Doak squared a pass across the face of the goal, and Semenyo powered a first-time finish into the net. You can’t just stop the man! The best player in the EPL this season! Three goals, three points!

Semenyo has registered six goals and three assists across seven league appearances this season. Everything he touches turns to goals! The 25-year-old Ghanaian footballer winger has been the driving force behind Bournemouth’s exceptional start to the 2025/2026 Premier League season, leading the club to their best-ever start to a PL season. 

NAIJA BOYS DESTROY BARCELONA

Akor Adams and Chidera Ejuke combined devastatingly as Sevilla FC thrashed FC Barcelona at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. 

The highly anticipated clash got off to a fiery start as Sevilla were awarded a penalty in the opening minutes of the game and former Barca player Alexis Sánchez dispatched it into the back of the net in the 13th minute. Isaac Romero doubled Sevilla’s lead in the 36th minute, but Marcus Rashford halved the deficit for Barcelona in the additional minutes of the first half. There was all to play for in the second half.

Robert Lewandowski failed to draw Barca level from the penalty spot in the 76th minute, and José Ángel Carmona penalised him swiftly by restoring Sevilla’s two-goal lead on the stroke of the 90th minute. With the game in the bag, Chidera Ejuke was introduced in the 93rd minute, and he combined with compatriot Akor Adams to pile further misery on the Catalan faithful in the sixth minute of additional time. Ejuke was sent sprinting down the left flank following a breathtaking counterattack, and the winger released a pass to Adams, who finished superbly—made and finished in Naija!

Having opened his goalscoring account last weekend, Akor Adams has now netted in consecutive appearances for Los Rojiblancos. The win was Sevilla’s first home win against FC Barcelona in a decade. 

ANGUISSA LIFTS NAPOLI TO THE TOP OF SERIE A TABLE

André-Frank Zambo Anguissa fired SSC Napoli to the top of the Serie A table with a sparkling performance against Genoa. The Cameroonian netted a goal to spark Napoli’s comeback and played a direct role in the match-winning goal. 

The visitors drew first blood as Jeff Ekhator opened the scoring for Genoa in the 33rd minute with an exquisite finish. The youngster’s goal was the difference between the two sides at the break. 

Napoli rallied themselves together during the halftime interval and got back on the front foot after the restart. With Napoli in desperate need of a hero, André-Frank Zambo Anguissa came up clutch and struck decisively in the 57th minute. Spinazzola teased a purposeful cross into Genoa’s box, and as they failed to clear their lines properly, Anguissa dived in bravely and nicked a header into the back of the net. Goal number two of the season for Anguissa as he tipped the scales of balance in Napoli’s favour.

The Cameroonian midfielder played a direct role in Napoli’s 75th-minute match-winning goal. Rasmus Højlund reacted instinctively and poked the rebound from Anguissa’s saved shot into the back of the net to complete the comeback. Super Anguissa! A vital victory for Napoli as they reclaimed top spot on the Serie A table. 

KOFANE LEADS LEVERKUSEN TO VICTORY

Christian Kofane followed up his midweek UEFA Champions League heroics with the match-winning goal as Bayer Leverkusen defeated Union Berlin at the BayArena. Ernest Poku opened the scoring for Leverkusen in the 33rd minute, and his goal was the difference between the two sides at the break. 

Leverkusen came out flying on all cylinders after the restart and doubled their lead through Cameroonian Striker Christian Kofane four minutes into the second half. Kofane’s tenacity and persistence paid off as he pressured Union Berlin’s goalkeeper into making a rookie mistake. Kofane capitalized on the goalie’s misplaced pass, rounded him up, and finished with aplomb. The 19-year-old striker opened his Bundesliga goalscoring account for Bayer Leverkusen in style. A perfect week for him, having netted his maiden goal for Leverkusen in their midweek UCL fixture against PSV Eindhoven. Die Werkself have now recorded consecutive Bundesliga victories for the first time this season.

MARTIAL GODO NETS BRACE IN ROUT

Ivorian youth international Martial Godo powered RC Strasbourg to their biggest Ligue 1 victory in four years with a clinical brace against Angers SCO at the 

Joaquín Panichelli opened the scoring for Strasbourg in the 36th minute, and his goal gave Strasbourg a first-half lead. The floodgates opened for Strasbourg after the restart, and they butchered their opponents mercilessly. Panichelli completed his brace in the 51st minute, and Ivorian midfielder Abdoul Ouattara got in on the act ten minutes later. Ivorian defender Gela Doué flicked a header to Ouattara’s path; he pounced on the ball and fired it into the net. His third goal in three appearances across all competitions! The Ivorian connection is reaping the rewards for Strasbourg once again!

Ivorian youth international Martial Godo netted his maiden Ligue 1 goal in the 66th minute to extend Strasbourg’s lead. Félix Lemaréchal flicked a pass to Godo, and he applied a well-timed finish to cap off a scintillating counterattacking move. The 22-year-old winger completed his brace four minutes after notching his maiden goal. Reacting quickly to a rebound from Panichelli’s saved shot, Godo buried it emphatically into the net. An unforgettable moment for the Ivorian winger! A resounding rout of Angers as Strasbourg recorded its biggest Ligue 1 victory since January 2021.
