Into The Life Of The Artist – Hybridbwoy

Hybridbwoy is a Nigerian artiste, who sings in the alternative/indie genre. Earlier this year, he released a joint extended playlist with Bizzonthetrack, which he described as “a great experience”. Recently, Hybrid bwoy released a power EP, featuring strong personalities, including Blaqbonez, Minz, KLY, and PrettyboyDO. “I recorded most of the songs when I was starting a new phase of my life, so basically I was just sharing everything I was going through at the time,” he says, when asked about the production process and motivation behind the project. Ever since Hybridbwoy officially stepped into the musical scene in 2016, he’s been on his toes, on the journey to make a lasting impact. “I’d like my music to be present in people’s heart even when I’m not there,” Hybridbwoy says, emphasizing how important the impact is to his journey.

49th Street: Tell us a bit about yourself without music. Who is HybridBwoy behind the camera, lights and loud sounds? Who are you on a Sunday evening?

Hybridbwoy: Just a cool dude chilling with friends and family. I hangout when I feel like getting some time off work to meditate.

49th Street: When did you decide to go into music? When was that pivotal moment for you?

Hybridbwoy: I’ve always wanted to do music, but I had to make sure I handled some more important things at the time, like education and so on. I started doing music when I had some producers and artists as friends. It became easier for me to make music. That was 2016.

49th Street: What is music to you? Why do you wake up every day and keep going to the studio?

Hybridbwoy: Music is a core part of my existence. Music is like the best way for me to express myself and communicate how I feel, so I enjoy doing it.

49th Street: How can you describe your whole musical journey so far?

Hybridbwoy: The journey has been kind of tough, especially when you’re an indie artist.

49th Street: What do you love most about your sound? What makes it unique?

Hybridbwoy: It makes it easy for me to express myself in my own words. It gives me more opportunities to put in more effort when I’m recording or writing my songs.

49th Street: Who are the artistes that inspire your style of music; artistes you look up to?

Hybridbwoy: 6lack, Wstrn, Saint Jhn, Geko, Maleekberry, Lotto Boyz, Wizkid, Burna Boy.

49th Street: Earlier this year, you released a joint EP with Bizzonthetrack titled “Hxb”. Tell us a little about the making of this EP, and how it felt working with Bizzonthetrack?

Hybridbwoy: It was a great experience working with Bizzonthetrack. He’s a good singer and songwriter, and I leant a lot from him while we were making the tape. I met producawa through him during the process. It was a beginning of a new chapter for me at the time and I’m glad we were able to put out the project successfully.

49th Street: Should we expect more collaborations from you both in the nearest feature?

Hybridbwoy: Yes.

49th Street: Let’s talk a little about your latest EP “6IX”. Tell us about the whole creative process behind this EP? How did you string the whole EP together and what was your inspiration for this EP?

Hybridbwoy: The EP was meant to drop last year. Due to some slight issues, I was not able to put the songs together for release, but I later decided to put some of them together during the recent lockdown we had.  I recorded most of the songs when I was starting a new phase of my life, so basically, I was just sharing everything I was going through at the time.

49th Street: Your new EP has a lot of great features—features from Blaqbonez, Minz, KLY, and PrettyboyDO. Describe the experience you had working with these artistes.

Hybridbwoy: It was tasking and fun at the same time. I had to take my time to sort the features in order to make sure the sounds are great. It was a great experience working with all of them. They did their thing on the songs and we made a great tape. I’m blessed. Thanks to everyone that worked with me on the tape…love always!

49th Street: What’s your favorite collaboration so far in the music industry?

Hybridbwoy: My collaboration with Kly.

49th Street: What are the highs and lows of being a musical artiste in the Nigerian Industry?

Hybridbwoy: There’s a joy that comes with knowing there are people out there that appreciate your work and find your craft inspirational to them. Nothing beats that.

Most time, people don’t take you as the ‘serious’ type when you decide to go on that career path and it’s not a good thing when you can’t get the encouragement that’s needed for you to keep pushing.

49th Street: Are there people in the industry today you’d really love to work with? If yes, can you mention a few?

Hybridbwoy: Wizkid, Ycee, Santi, Wande Coal, Amaarae.

49th Street: How far do you plan to take your music? Are there any major plans coming soon?

Hybridbwoy: Till my craft gets a global recognition…need the tours, concerts and all lol.

I’ve got some singles, features and projects on the way…keep streaming!

49th Street: If you weren’t making music today, what would you be doing?

Hybridbwoy: Anything that has to do with fashion. I’ve been trying out some ideas in that area.

49th Street: What kind of impact would you want to have had in the industry in the end?

Hybridbwoy: I’d like my music to be present in people’s hearts even when I’m not there.

49th Street: Any message for your fans out there?

Hybridbwoy: Thanks for your support and love. I appreciate the feedbacks and genuine love I’ve being receiving so far…more music on the way.
