Egyptian Premier League Champions Al Ahly maintained their grip on the number one position at the latest CAF Club Rankings 2025, released ahead of the Preliminary stage draws for the 2025/2026 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup tournaments. South African Champions Mamelodi Sundowns and Tunisian Champions Esperance Sportive De Tunis rounds up the top three.
The latest rankings offer a glimpse into the dynamic competitiveness of African football, a balance between continental heavyweights and upcoming challengers eager to disrupt the status quo.
With 78 points, Al Ahly have underlined their status as the undisputed heavyweights of African Club football, a testament to their historical and contemporary dominance in CAF Club competitions. The record champions have won four CAF Champions League titles in the span of six years. In retrospect, only two African Clubs have won more in the competition’s history.
Mamelodi Sundowns has become an unrivaled powerhouse nationally and regionally, challenging and triumphing over the continent’s best. With 62 points, their second-place ranking is well deserved—a remarkable leap from 4th to 2nd for Masandawana. ES Tunis dropped to third position while Wydad AC spiraled downwards to 8th from their 3rd position at the start of the 2024/2025 season.
CAF Confederations Cup Champions RS Berkane are ranked fourth, and Tanzania’s Simba SC is in the top five. The reigning CAF Champions League title holders, Pyramids FC, are ranked sixth on the African continent. Egyptian dominance is highlighted in the rankings with three teams in the top 10; no other country has as many.
Rivers United, the highest-ranked Nigerian team, placed 23rd with 14 points, slipping five spots lower than their position last season. Enyimba FC is the second-highest-ranked Nigerian team, in 35th position (7 points), a commendable ascent from 44th the previous season. No other Nigerian team features in the top 75, underscoring a slow, decadent decline over the years.
