Cyllabus shows his versatility on his self-titled EP

Cyllabus is an artiste that has been steadily building a profile to reckon with for some time now. Blessed with the gift of music, the Lagos born and bred singer has showcased himself in the best way possible on damn near every track preceding the release of his debut body of work. Groovy and melodious mid-tempo tracks are his preferred instrument of choice for making music, good music.

“Cyllabus Tha EP” is a 6-track extended playlist that marks his first project release. It dropped on the 19th of February and has so far garnered over 200k streams across all platforms in the few weeks it’s been out. And it’s easy to see why; the project marks a great display of talent and skill by the Ariwoko Records signee.

The EP in question has Cyllabus exploring a variety of themes. On “Spiritual” he takes us to church and dives into prayer mode as he requests more blessings from God. “With You”, “Mario” and “Connect” follow with the more predictable theme of profession of love. “Ogara Ogara” is the party track of the project with lyrics urging listeners to celebrate life to the fullest. He celebrates himself on the last track of the EP – “Story Of My Life” – as he recounts the past struggles he has surmounted.

As far as the sounds go, Afrobeats dominates with the exception of “Connect” which sees Cyllabus join the Nigerian invasion of the South African Amapiano sound. The melody is infectious all through and the EP features a steady increase in tempo from tracks 1-5 before a drop in the last song. The smart ordering of the songs makes the listening experience all the more interesting; you’re bopping your head along to the first three tunes then you’re fighting off vibes to get on your feet and dance on “Ogara Ogara” and “Connect”. Often, we don’t pay attention to the background sounds yet they are the ones that really make or mar an instrumental; the backgrounds sounds here elevate the songs to greater heights and full credit should go to everyone who worked on the production, mixing and mastering on this EP.

If you have not contributed to the streams this lovely project has pulled so far, you should fix up and give it a spin now.

Standout Track(s): Mario, Connect
