49th

At 30, David Adeleke, famously known by his chosen stage name, Davido, has established himself as a pillar in the Nigerian community, and the African community at large.

Primarily known as a musical artist, Davido’s rise to stardom began in 2011 with the release of his debut album, Omo Babalowo. Now recognized as one of the pioneers and forerunners of modern Afro-pop, Davido has won the hearts of many with his infectious tunes and crooning voice.

Despite his privileged beginnings, the songster worked hard to create an authentic fan base of supporters who love his music as well as his personality.
Some of his popular hits include Dami Duro, Skelewu, If and Fall, the latter earning the title of the most Shazamed song in New York in 2018. Davido’s efforts in conducting connections and collaborations with American and European artists has greatly contributed to bridging the gap between the afrobeats industry and the more global/mainstream music industry based in the UK and US.

As an artist, Davido has explored a variety of sounds in an effort to diversify his music and deliver fresh sounds to his audience. Despite criticism, he has always stayed resilient and worked on his craft, as evidenced by his most recent releases, the sophomore and third albums titled A Good Time, and A Better Time respectively. His collaborations with South African Amapiano star, Focalistic on two songs, Champion Sound and Ke DStar, have also been heralded as some of the best collaborations between African artists in the most recent years.

Beyond music, Davido is known for his generosity towards fans and social causes alike. His philanthropy record includes sponsoring a fan’s university education, building a house for a young mother and child in need, and most recently and famously, conducting a fundraiser for orphanages across Nigeria under the guise of raising money for a car to mark his 29th birthday. The initiative concluded with a total amount of 200 million Naira, boosted to 250 million by the artist’s personal donation.

To his fans, Davido’s appeal can also be attributed to his relatability and his willingness to be honest and vulnerable about his journey in terms of both successes and failures. The artist is famous for engaging with his fans on a personal level, most recently dropping by a fan’s ‘DMW-themed’ party in a surprise gesture that marked his commitment to his fans’ happiness.

Overall, Davido stands out as a visionary, pioneer and a man of the people, with his character and music alike speaking for him.
