Disha’s Lagos Rap Battle Was Necessary for Nigerian Hip Hop

20 rappers signed up to showcase their talents at the Disha #PowerYourCraft challenge, but 13 showed up to defend their titles as winners. The first stage featured an online challenge and entries came in from creatives across many cities in Nigeria. And on the 7th of December, Disha held their first Rap Battle event in Lekki, Lagos. The rap battle is another attempt by Disha to help as many young, creative Nigerians as possible to power their crafts and take their skill set to a level where profit can be yielded.

The event had sessions about the incredible work being done by Disha and the amazing tools in place to help them make the best use of their digital assets – including organised streaming, merch sales and other cutting-edge tools they’ll find useful in their craft.

The battle had several rounds, starting from the free verse session, after which they were reduced to 10 contestants. The round involved a peer-to-peer battle where they were grouped to battle against each other. A wild card round was brought in to revive one of the four rappers who didn’t win their battle rounds. One of them, Thriller Worthy, made it to the final stage.

The end of the rounds left the judges, Ikechukwu, Illbliss, Ugoccie, Osagie Alonge, and Ayodeji Badmus with Quizzy (Winner), Young Incredible (1st Runner Up) and El Rhey (2nd Runner Up) who went home with cash prizes of $1000, $750, and $500 respectively. Quizzy happened to have caught the attention of the judges, especially Ikechukwu who seemed to have been amazed by his rhythmic flows.

Other amazing prizes for the winners include 5 minutes to perform on stage at FlyTime Festival, a free recording session with Glitch Africa for Quizzy, a free recording session at FreeMe Space, and a merchandise pack from Boomplay – one of the partners – for all three finalists.

Kelechi Nwadike, product manager at Disha, believes that even beyond rappers and musicians, every creator of any kind can capitalise on Disha to take over their industries. He said: “With Disha, every single creator in the world can get that big stage to showcase their work and get paid for it. So, we’re really excited to watch all these amazing talents and even more excited to provide a platform for them to power their craft and get to the next level with Disha.”
