Every now and then, Nigerian Rap faces an existential moment of reckoning. On one hand critics claim the rappers misunderstand their audience while on the other hand, the artists feel the audience struggle to align with their perspectives.
In the midst of all this, a certain class of rappers have defied this moment and built some leverage with the audience by creating relatable music which taps into the feelings and insecurities of their base.
Building on the success of his most recent collaboration with Simi, rapper Dremo releases his second single of the year. Titled “Monaco”, Dremo connects with in-form beatsmith, Niphkeys, unfurling his usual spirited rap flow we’ve come to adore over the years. Monaco borrows from drill sounds updated with a sizable ferocity, supplemented with thumping drums and mournful synths.
Monaco passes the message of Dremo’s tireless work ethic even amidst distractions, inspiring listeners not to slip into comfort but to continue chasing every available opportunity.
With the positive reception that followed his last song, Confam, racking over 5 million streams so far, Monaco depicts Dremo’s uniqueness and frontline status ahead of the release of his third studio project.
