D’Tigress Defeat Senegal to Reach 2025 AfroBasket Final

Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, the D’Tigress, produced a dramatic comeback to defeat Senegal 75-68 in the semifinals of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket, booking their place in the championship game in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

The clash at the Palais des Sports de Treichville on Saturday, August 2, 2025, was a tale of two halves. Nigeria opened strongly, outscoring Senegal 22-17 in the first quarter and edging the second 21-20 to carry a 43-37 lead into halftime. Senegal then rallied fiercely, dominating the third period 21-9 and seizing a six-point advantage. Yet in the decisive final frame, the D’Tigress executed a 23-10 run, overturning the deficit and sealing a seven-point victory.

The triumph extended Nigeria’s unbeaten streak over continental foes to a full decade and marked the team’s fifth consecutive AfroBasket final appearance, a testament to their sustained dominance in African women’s basketball.

Standout performers for Nigeria included veteran guard Ezinne Kalu, who led the team with 19 points, six rebounds and three assists, alongside Promise Amukamara’s 16 points, four boards and three dishes. Amy Okonkwo chipped in 15 points and five rebounds, while Victoria Macaulay added 13 points and three rebounds. Senegal’s challenge was spearheaded by Cierra Dillard’s 26-point, seven-rebound, three-assist effort, with Ndioma Kane contributing 14 points.

Next up for the D’Tigress is a title showdown against Mali. The Malian side booked their spot in the final by dispatching South Sudan 76-50 in the other semifinal, setting the stage for Sunday’s championship clash.
