Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele’s latest movie, Everybody Loves Jenifa, has achieved unprecedented success, becoming the highest-grossing Nigerian film of all time. Since its release on December 13, 2024, the film has grossed over ₦1.466 billion at the box office, surpassing the previous record held by Akindele’s 2023 film, A Tribe Called Judah, which earned ₦1.404 billion.
The film’s remarkable performance includes earning over ₦40 million on its opening day, setting a new record for the highest opening day gross for a Nollywood film. Within its first week, it garnered ₦355.1 million, and by the second weekend, its total earnings exceeded ₦700 million. Notably, Everybody Loves Jenifa reached the ₦1 billion mark within 19 days, becoming the fastest Nollywood title to achieve this milestone.
Internationally, the film earned $100,000 during its opening week in cinemas across the diaspora, reportedly achieving the largest opening weekend for a Nollywood film outside Africa.
Akindele’s consistent box office success has solidified her status as a leading figure in the Nigerian film industry. Her previous works, including Battle on Buka Street (2022) and Omo Ghetto: The Saga (2020), have also enjoyed significant commercial success, grossing ₦668 million and ₦636 million, respectively.
The Jenifa franchise, which began with Jenifa in 2008, has evolved into a cultural phenomenon, with Akindele’s portrayal of the titular character resonating with audiences both domestically and internationally. The latest installment’s success is attributed to its wide audience appeal, effective marketing strategies, and the enduring popularity of the franchise.
Everybody Loves Jenifa continues to draw audiences to cinemas, contributing to the growth and global recognition of Nollywood. Akindele’s achievements reflect the industry’s potential and the increasing quality of Nigerian filmmaking.
