DJing from the Ground Up: Homecoming and Alpha Theta Brings ‘Start From Scratch Initiative’ to Lagos

HOMECOMING™ is proud to have facilitated the Lagos debut of Start From Scratch, a hands-on DJ workshop series designed to open the world of DJing to complete beginners and aspiring selectors.

Following impactful sessions across London, Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam, and beyond, Start From Scratch made its debut in Lagos in 2025, delivered from the newly opened HOMECOMING™ space and supported by the leading music tech brand AlphaTheta. Following a successful first class in September, additional workshops were held in Lagos throughout the remainder of the year, with more scheduled for 2026.

The programme is built for those with little or no experience, breaking down the theory, tools, and fundamentals of DJing, alongside the creative and cultural thinking behind it. From beatmatching and blends to reading a room and building your sound, Start From Scratch equipped new DJs with the confidence to get started and stay grounded in their own voice.

Speaking of the event, Alpha Theta described the initiative as a critical pathway to supporting new talent. “At AlphaTheta, our goal with the Start From Scratch programme is to lower the barriers to entry in DJing and music creation,” a rep said. “We want these classes to spark confidence, create new pathways into the industry, and show that talent can come from anywhere independently of their background. For us, success means that participants walk away with practical skills, but also with a sense of belonging, that they deserve a place in DJ culture and the wider music ecosystem.”

So far, HOMECOMING™ has worked with guest mentors like Major League DJz, DJ Spinall, Dope Caesar, Gina Jeanz, Donnie Sunshine, Dare Balogun, and Kitty Amor to lead sessions across Europe and Africa. For the Lagos editions, we are proud to have welcomed an inspiring lineup of DJs, producers, and cultural figures from across the continent and diaspora who continue to push boundaries and champion new sounds.

Each mentor led intimate, interactive sessions built around both skill and storytelling, giving attendees a rare chance to learn directly from the people shaping today’s sound. This series is more than a workshop; it’s a platform for access and long-term growth. With AlphaTheta’s support, we’re also deepening our commitment to building DJ infrastructure in Africa: investing in talent development, local creative ecosystems, and a wider music culture that encourages play, experimentation, and ownership.

Importantly, attendees will get an opportunity to work on activations with HOMECOMING™ in the future, demonstrating the company’s commitment to facilitating communal growth and sustainability. “For HOMECOMING, this alumni group has become a reliable and growing pool of young DJs who understand the energy and expectations of our events,” the company said in a statement.  “It also allows us to place talent in a way that reflects our commitment to supporting the future of African and diaspora creativity.”
