Interview with Shayo and Doingz

49th

Shayo and Doingz are a dynamic duo making waves in the underground music industry. Shayo is an Underground Artist while Doingz is a Producer. They’ve been best friends for 6 years.

Welcome Shayo and Doingz. It’s an honor to have you here.

Shayo: It’s an honor to be here, thank you for having us.

Doingz: Yes, thank you.

Tell us a little about yourselves

Shayo: Well, you already know my name is Shayo, I’m an artiste and I make feel-good music. That’s the most important thing about me, I think.

Doingz: Don’t mind this one, he doesn’t like to talk, says he wants his work to speak for him. I’m Doingz. Anybody that tells you he hasn’t heard of me is a liar. As a Mushin boy, I dey everywhere. People have said that I’m the next best thing after sliced bread, they’re not wrong.

That’s certainly interesting. So, how does it feel to be finally living your dream in the music industry?

Shayo: It feels great. I’m finally doing what I love and being my true self.

Doingz: I won’t say it’s been bad o, that’s not what I’m saying, but it certainly has been underwhelming. From the outside, it looks glamorous but once you’re inside, hmm, this industry. God dey sha.

Do you call yourself underrated or underground?

Shayo: Underground. Calling myself underrated feels somehow to me. I’m just underground, I’ll soon be famous.

Doingz: Underrated. Criminally underrated sef, if that’s a thing. But it won’t be for long sha. Everybody that slept on me will regret it, watimagbo.

Do you have a specific rollout plan whenever you release music?

Shayo: There’s nothing o. Just the grace of God and our family and friends. Pushing it to the best of their ability.

Doingz: You see the thing about this industry, is that there is no guaranteed formula for blowing. You can want to pay these music blogs but they will charge you your left arm and left leg, but you will see results at least for a while. You can say you want to pay all these influencers and influencer blogs with a large following (Laughs), that’s just a waste of money. They don’t know how to be creative with it, except one or two, and after that, it’s back to regular programming. Whatever traction you get from those first few days, that’s the end.

You sound pained. What do you do to unwind or relax when the pressure gets too much?

Shayo: Whenever I’m stressed out, I lock myself in my room with a pie or two or five. And a bottle of the strongest vodka I can find. That’s how I unwind.

Doingz: Look at this one saying one bottle, he can finish five bottles, drinking till he passes out. Even now, he drank half a bottle of Jack Daniel’s before coming here. I don’t even know how he’s coherent.

Shayo: He’s lying.

Doingz: I’m not but okay. When I want to relax, I go to the largest party I can find or I go to the club so they can play Dorime for me. Spending money relaxes me. Spending money where there are other people is doubly relaxing.

Do you have a support system for your music?

Shayo: I’ve said this before but family and friends. And maybe my Twitter and Instagram followers. After that, it’s in God’s hands.

Doingz: E no easy to be indie artist o. It’s just you and your friends carrying your music on their heads.

What do you love about the music industry?

Shayo: Being able to express myself through my talent.

Doingz: Shayo likes saying nonsense, what he meant was fame, status and lifestyle. I mean think about it what’s there not to love?

How do you create music? Tell us about your creation process.

Shayo: As funny as this might sound, I get my inspiration from my name “shayo”. All I need is a bottle of my finest dry gin and I’m ready to go in the studio all night.

Doingz: Unlike Shayo who needs a bottle or two to do what he loves, I bad pass wizzy. Omo rhythm dey flow like river in my head, I’m the real rap messiah they all talk about je kan mo. Doingz international!

What’s your inspiration? What gets you motivated?

Shayo: Before Doingz says alcohol, yes it’s alcohol most times but other times it’s listening to good music out there.

Doingz: I’m always outside, we outsiders, outside gang o por. Na from outside we dey get our daily ginger.

Shayo and Doingz, you’ve been friends for a long time now, how did you guys meet?

Shayo: It’s a funny story, we’ve been friends and roommates since our 100 level days in the university and how we started talking was because we found out we were chasing the same babe.

Doingz: Shayo is a liar, the babe was chasing me and Shayo was chasing the babe. But yeah bros over hoes, I left the babe for him but she dumped him. Fear women!

Who do you look up to in the music industry?

Shayo: I don’t want to mention names before the stans come for me, but we all know the man with the biggest doingz, that’s who I look up to.

Doingz: Omo, na God o. Because if you look up to anybody, they can fall your hand.

Why Music, why not something else?

Shayo: I could have had a life with medicine, you know being a doctor and cutting people up but I don’t think I can see myself doing anything else asides making music.

Doingz: Can I be completely honest? If I was doing anything else I don’t think I’ll be genuinely happy. Music has always been there for me since my days on the street in Mushin.

Are we expecting any hits from you guys soon? If yes, are we finally getting features?

Shayo: Sure sure, me and Doingz have a few hits for y’all, watch this space.

Doingz: Y’all should just wait, Doingz and Shayo would be a Bang come 2022.

Asides making music, what else do you guys love doing?

Shayo: Drinking

Doingz: Chasing women and catching cruise, WTMG!

Do you have any advice for anyone who wants to get into the music industry?

Shayo: Be yourself and make music you’re happy with.

Doingz: The Industry is crazy, shine your eyes well o.

Any final words for your fans?

Shayo: Stay simple, Live life to the fullest, Don’t dull.

Doingz:  E get as life go be you go bend like crayfish, but remember crayfish na still fish too. Don’t forget who you are, one love.
