Melodi Shares ‘Something In A Name’: A Journey of Love and Emotion

Melody Olunne Amadi, professionally known as ‘Melodi’ is a Nigerian singer and Afrobeats singer, who also dabbles with R&B and Soul. Born and bred in the city of PH, Melodi is a star on the rise with a promising career ahead in music. With her debut EP ‘Something In A Name,’ she shows the depth and boundless nature of her artistry.

Her background is strongly rooted in music, as her parents are well entrenched in the classical music community of the Anglican communion in Port Harcourt. Her father is an acclaimed tenor singer and her mother is a soulful soprano and a choir mistress with a deep, burning love for children’s singing. Her older brother is currently studying music at the University of PH, who plays the trumpet and is also the founder of a band, that gives lessons on drums, wind instruments and another older brother who is a keyboardist and a tenor singer also.

Groomed with earnest prayers from a mother to birth a child that would carry on in her place and breach new heights she couldn’t, it’s no wonder that Melodi continues to hone her own sonic identity, that’s unique from mainstream shenanigans and grounded her in her own personal experiences, as well as those around her and the culture of her home to concoct an infectious formular of creating timeless music that would resonate with every soul.

The EP is titled “Something In A Name” and it’s an exhibition of sonic versatility and the emotions of a girl, hopeless in love. The project kicks off with a shameless profession of her unrequited affection in ‘Yabaleft’ and ‘Away.’ Both songs are intense and bold expressions of love and the lengths she would go for her lover, as well as her insatiable thirst for his body. ‘

Only You’ takes a darker turn and the narrative rears its head with the lows of fleeting love that comes with fame and emphasizes the importance of looking out for oneself. On ‘Silent, she is frustrated out of her mind with the games and forges her own path, taking her own advice on the previous song to prioritize herself.

The end of the project is saddled with a foreboding of gloom, and a promise of hope. On ‘These Days’, she comes to terms with the end of her love story and forgives herself for her survivor’s guilt. ‘Better Offer’ is a narrative piece about a girl that’s been hurt in love and has her guards up, but finds someone new that she’s willing to go all in for again without dwelling too much in the past.

‘Something In A Name’ is more than a collection of songs. It’s an heartfelt story that chronicles the highs and lows of love, the intricacies of the human condition and feelings and the perseverance of love. The EP is now out on all major streaming platforms.
