My Father’s Shadow by Akinola Davies Jr. to Premiere at 2025 BFI London Film Festival

The 69th BFI London Film Festival, taking place from 8–19 October 2025, will feature the European premiere of My Father’s Shadow, the debut feature from British-Nigerian filmmaker Akinola Davies Jr.

The film, which first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard section, made history as the first Nigerian title selected for Cannes’ official lineup. It went on to earn a special Mention for the Caméra d’Or, signaling Davies Jr. as one of the most exciting new voices in cinema.

Set in Lagos, 1993, during the turmoil of Nigeria’s disputed presidential election, the story follows two young brothers, Remi and Akin, played by real-life siblings Godwin Chiemerie Egbo and Chibuike Marvellous Egbo. They spend a rare and transformative day with their estranged father, portrayed by acclaimed British-Nigerian actor Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù.

Critics have praised My Father’s Shadow as a moving, universal tale about fathers, sons, and the weight of memory. The Guardian described it as a “subtle and intelligent coming-of-age drama” that beautifully captures the textures of Lagos and the complexities of family bonds.

The project is deeply personal for Davies Jr., co-written with his brother Wale Davies, who first drafted the story in 2012. Inspired by their shared experience of growing up without their father, the film blends intimate storytelling with the broader socio-political context of Nigeria in the 1990s.

Produced by Element Pictures, Fatherland Productions, BBC Film, BFI, and Crybaby Productions, the film is supported by MUBI, which is also handling its worldwide distribution.

Alongside Idris Elba’s Dust to Dreams, My Father’s Shadow represents a milestone for Nigerian cinema at the London Film Festival, highlighting Nollywood’s rising influence on the global stage.

With its heartfelt performances, layered storytelling, and striking visuals, My Father’s Shadow promises to be one of the standout films of this year’s festival season.
