NEW MUSIC FRIDAY: THE TOLU DANIELS TOP 5 PICK

49th

Ladipoe – Big Energy

He has always been different, he knows what to deliver at every point. It’s always been “rappers can’t be commercial and still rap”, well he’s done that, he’s doing that. The crowd chorus formula is working magic and I am totally in love with how Ladipoe has put that in a rap record, it’s ingenious. His flow is really impeccable, with all that braggadocio on this song.

Mojo – Rap Jesu

My days, what a song! Mojo, what a guy!

To be honest, it’s been a minute I heard a flow like this. Effortless. Mojo, for me, wields this superpower that is his clarity with his words, no matter what language they’re in. You’d pick each line and you’re going crazy. “Agba ika, no rapper sicker” is succinctly apt. It’s how the flow keeps going like a tide. “I go deep like submarine, embarrass them with the flow normally” is exactly what he did on this song. The replay value is insane.

Wyze – Popping Bottles

A production masterclass. Word to JayPizzle.

I see potential on this record. I particularly enjoyed the bounce on this record, he was literally floating easy on the instrumental that sounded like you have to surf it. And he can make a good hook, I can picture boys posted up in the club just screaming “popping bottles”

Yung Willis – Giving Dem

Willis knows how to “give dem”. There’s nothing I enjoy more than a good “konto/swo” flip. This is such a very hard production, too bad. Instrumental felt like the perfect playground Timaya needed. Basically brought out the “plantain boy” Timaya. The Kabusa Oriental Choir touch? Absolutely love it. They gave this record all the flavour and color it needed. It’s an amazing record, all round

Oxlade – Ku Lo Sa

Such a stupendous record.

I don’t know how he’s hitting that much high notes while still maintaining potency with the words he’s churning. It’s amazing. Oxlade is effortlessly weaving different melodies at one go. Oxlade has always been an amazing vocalist, but his songwriting abilities is not spoken on enough, I truly believe he’s an amazing songwriter. Another thing I like about this record is how it was titled.
