New Music Friday: The Tolu Daniels Top 5 Pick

Asake – Peace Be Unto You

I am particularly obsessed with this song. I fell in love with it the minute the snippet dropped online.

Asake has a way with words, especially the yoruba vocabulary, it’s so attractive. Trying my hardest to name his genre and the best I’ve ever come up with is “a-fusion-of-pop-fuji-rap”. Yes, that’s how ridiculously good that sound is. On “Peace Be On To You”, just wordplay is incredibly wicked. It also has some of the most relatable lines. In the same vein, has lyrics that are real and personal, has “lamba”. And at the same time, he was weaving stupendous melodies. This song has a bit of everything, all well put together. The production on this record is amazing too. The female back up vocals is genius.

Slymkrez – LTTM/DSTM EP

Every friday I always look out for my one wildcard drop. This is this last friday’s. Absolutely love it, it’s so different. The album intro got me into this tape, i wanted to hear what it was. The folk song type sample in the chorus is sending chills down my spine. Then there’s a funk vibe on “Roadside”, mind blowing. The lead guitar carried! Then there’s the slow burner “Quando”. There’s this ghanaian vibe on it, it’s ridiculously sweet.

The production work on this tape is one of my favorite things about it. Need to check out the producer, proper.

Chris Brown – Call Me Everyday ft Wizkid

I love a collaboration like this. It’s “rice and beans” music. Chris Brown is AfroBeats favorite family friend. This record is too smooth, it’s reminiscent of the SFTOS tape, that i think is an absolutely amazing tape.

The production is ridiculously good, insane levels. Blaise Beatz was in his bag. The live saxophone, the keys, the drum bounce. It’s an amazingly good record.

Mayorkun – Certified Loner

I’m such a fan of Mayorkun’s music. The melodies he was weaving on this song? Ridiculous. What he’s done on this record is something you can be sure only a Mayorkun can do. It’s just that type of record. You just know when a record is going to do so well. It’s ticks the reliability box so well, so much that there are so many quotables on the record. And nothing ever lost taste all through this record. It’s such an amazing song

Ruger – Second Wave Deluxe

This brother knows how to make dancehall records! He has a way with his dancehall that it is firmly rooted in Afro-Pop. You can’t even deny his talent. “Girlfriend” is a major summer bop, it’s ridiculously good. The instrumental? Oh my days, insane. The songwriting, on the three new songs added to the tape, is ridiculous, top notch. The “Girlfriend” record is going to blow up proper, especially with that dance going on with it.

“Wewe” is an amazing slow burner record. I absolutely love it. Sounds like an absolutely freestyled record and it is perfect.

I would have loved to get an entirely new tape, with an extra joint of course, but I totally understand what this deluxe is.

Tay Iwar – Bad4U

I always remind people that he’s one of the most talented artistes in this country. He knows how to make music, good music. Best part is that his ceiling is so high. “Bad4U” is probably the perfect slow tempo song I needed at this point in my life. The melodies are so good. This man’s pen game is one of the best in this country. The clarity in his notes, is just amazing. He’s on the record just floating. I want to be sure if it was a self sample on this record

Mairé – Woman

I want to send a crate of cold stout to “Spellz” for this production. He perfectly tailored this instrumental for “Mairé”, whose voice I think is amazing. This song is like an ode to women. It’s a proper nice AfroBeats record. The live saxophone is so good, gives this record a lot of color. This vibe is just the perfect, get up and go and move type of vibe.
