Osamede Becomes First Nigerian Historical Fantasy to Premiere at Cannes Film Market

The Nigerian historical fantasy film Osamede is set to make its international debut at the 2025 Cannes Film Market on May 17, screening at the Pavillon Afriques. Directed by Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) winner James Omokwe and executive produced by Lilian Olubi, the film marks a major milestone for Nigerian cinema on the global stage.

Set during the 1897 British invasion of the Benin Kingdom, Osamede follows a young orphan girl who discovers superhuman powers linked to the ancient Aruosa stone. With these powers, she embarks on a quest to free her people from colonial domination.

Starring Ivie Okujaye Egboh, Lexan Aisosa Peters, William Benson, Tosin Adeyemi, and others, the film adapts a successful stage production by Gold Lilies Productions. It combines rich African mythology with high cinematic values, aiming to introduce African historical fantasy to global audiences.
