Before Sunrise is a 4-track EP which, for me, marks the first I’m hearing of the artiste responsible for it, Mylo Hebron. The project is a love-themed body of work defined by Afrobeat sounds and solid vocal performances.
Before Sunrise opens up with “Beside Me.” The tune is a familiar but catchy one and Mylo Hebron doesn’t miss a step as he glides his way through the beat, crooning beautifully about needing the attention of an absentee lover. Next up is “One Night.” Mylo again chooses a tested and trusted Afrobeat sound to flex his abilities on. The vocal performance is good and the lyrics are solid but the familiarity of the beat is a bit of a downer for me. The production work on this song is top notch though and is easily the best one (in terms of production) on the EP. But then it’s Oxygen on the mix so we can’t expect any different. Track 3 is “Oyi” and Mylo Hebron sticks to the formula he used on the first 2 songs. “Oyi” doesn’t stand out amidst its peers but it’s a good entry nonetheless. The EP closes out with “On My Way” and Mylo makes a very surprising shift on this song and it’s a surprise I particularly enjoyed. Here, he opts against singing, instead choosing rap as the tool with which he tells the story of falling in love with someone he can’t have. “On My Way” is a very welcome change in style and sound and the artiste shows very good range in ability with his effort on this song.
Standout track: On My Way
Mylo Hebron showcases great talent on this EP and I look forward to hearing him experiment with newer sounds as he progresses in his music journey. The talent is undeniably there with the man excelling lyrically and vocally on all 4 tracks, all he needs now is to opt for bolder sounds to make a name for himself in the game. Altogether a decent EP and one that shows promise.
Verdict : 6/10
