PROJECT REVIEW – MASTER GROOVE

It is quite audacious for an emerging artiste to name his debut project “Master Groove”. This is what Badyouth does, and he backs up his audacity with quality music. Badyouth channels soulfulness and vulnerability in his music, and this shines through on Master Groove.

Genres: Afrobeat, Afro Pop, Afro Pop.

The EP opens up with Street Hard, the afro trap number is a proper introduction to an amazing project. The song begins with a conversation, in which a young boy talks about helping the poor and saving the world. Badyouth goes on to sing about the difficulties he has faced and how hard it is to suceed. There is a sharp contrast between the optimism of the boy at the beginning of the song, and Badyouth’s reality; “Street hard, they no dey tell person”. Kalanga is a great Afrobeat tune, with Badyouth making good use of adlibs. The project gets even better as it progresses, with Afro pop tunes, Fire Man, Yawa, Maramma and Because Of You all

following in quick succession. Because Of You, a love song is the standout track on the EP, it is easy to see Badyouth performing this song at weddings. On Kim’s Interlude, Kim talks about how special Afrobeats is, capturing all the qualities that Master Groove has. Badyouth signs out with the title track, Master Groove and he fully comes into his Afrobeat element on this song. This song got me nodding to the beat in no time, validating everything that was said on Kim’s Interlude.

Standout Tracks: Street Hard, Because Of You, Master Groove.
