PROJECT REVIEW – TONI EP

49th

Young Nigerian-UK based prodigy, Toni Dada released his self-titled debut project “Toni” the EP. Toni is a multifaceted talented singer, songwriter and producer.

Toni Dada releases his debut project after a run of freestyles, a hot single -“Candy” featuring Zarion Uti, and multiple guest verses. This EP sees production credits from Jaylon, Lames, Jabani and Certibeats. These producers laid the perfect foundation for this piece of work to be brought to life. Majority of the mixing and mastering credits are attributed to the illustrious HVRRY who has also worked with Odunsi,  Davido, Buju and Wani. So you can expect the smoothest of sounds and transitions on this EP.

It is a four track EP with each song showing a different side of Toni. Jojo is the stand out song on the EP for the usual Nigerian party rocker. Catchy lyrics, a sublime hook and the energy off the song, all contribute to its apparent pedigree and class. Jojo is reminiscent of Nigeria’s best pop & Afro fusion songs, with a familiar yet standout sound. The other songs on the EP are notably noteworthy as Toni Dada shows his versatility and range throughout the project. The first song on the EP “Desperado” sees the only guest feature: Abuja’s hotshot rapper, Tomi Obanure fiercely dominates this track with the smoothest of verses. Desperado was also dropped as the only single off the EP. On the other two tracks: Foreign and Cold, Toni Dada shows his range. On “Cold” he talks about a real life heart-breaking experience with a lover.

He doesn’t limit himself to a certain style or pattern, he truly shows his versatility. This EP is just the tip of the iceberg as Toni personally feels his best work is still ahead of him.

As it’s Toni’s debut project it means a lot to him. For Toni, this EP expresses his style, thoughts, sound and a few consequences for certain actions of his past that he had to go through.

The art direction for the EP is symbolic. The eagle symbolizes his growth, strengths and most importantly how high he sees himself soaring amongst all odds, eagles only come down to hunt prey, so for Toni Dada the sky is the limit. He hopes people enjoy EP. He’s currently working on his next project and it definitely would be so much better, so watch out.

Standout tracks: Jojo & Desperado feat. Tomi Obanure
