The Nigeria Fencing Federation (NFF) has appointed Riccardo Bardine to lead Team Nigeria at the upcoming 2025 African Fencing Championships, scheduled in Lagos from June 27 to 29.
This appointment follows a landmark four-year technical partnership signed in December 2024 between the NFF and the Italian Fencing Federation (FIS). Under the agreement, FIS will provide technical expertise, coaching support, and referee training to help develop the sport in Nigeria.
NFF President Adeyinka Samuel described the move as a major step forward for Nigerian fencing. “Bringing in a coach of Bardine’s calibre is not only cost-effective but also immensely impactful, especially for our athletes and coaches based both locally and abroad,” he said.
Riccardo Bardine is expected to arrive in Nigeria by mid-May to oversee final preparations and training camps ahead of the Championships. Selection trials for the Nigerian squad will begin later this month.
Nigeria has been making strides in international fencing, recently hosting the first Men’s Junior Épée World Cup in Sub-Saharan Africa. With this latest development, the NFF is aiming for podium finishes in at least three weapon categories at the 2025 continental event.
The partnership is also expected to enhance coaching standards and create a pathway toward Olympic qualification for Nigerian fencers in the years ahead.
