Rise of the Runna

Jonny Ezi Tochukwu, formally known as 4Runna, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, rapper and producer. Hip hop is his primary genre, as this is most of what he consumes. However, he’ll slide on anything with a good melody. His music can be characterized as storytelling, dynamic, and heavy.

While growing up in Port Harcourt, music was the only thing 4Runna really connected with as the third of four children. Finding himself constantly drawn to alluring melodies and hip hop songs, in particular, led him to an intense fascination with the music creation process. From the tune’s creation to the layering of it unto the beat, he’s always found himself interested in such. Surprisingly, Jonny did not grow up actively involved in church, as seems to be the pattern with most people who harboured an adoration for music as children. However, he would engineer his own studio using empty buckets.

When it comes to music, Jonny regards it as a lifesaver. Detailing how singing or rapping made him feel close to the giants of music, hearing his voice bounce back at him in the echo of the buckets. You could say he was that one guy who always had earphones, humming the tune to some song or discovering new music. He further explains why he started making music, stating that he listened to music too often to not create his own. Moreover, he aspired to be like the people he was listening to, pushing his own narrative so others can listen and digest just like he did.

Having people listen to and appreciate his music now is having his ambitions actualized. Jonny is thankful and realizes this as a privilege each time he sits to reflect on it. Speaking of creating music, the direction is an integral part of his process. Once a line or theme comes to him, he can pinpoint the approach to further the idea; the song just writes itself from then on.

If you wonder who inspires this young man, he speaks of having various inspirations depending on his stage of life. Young 4Runna was heavily influenced by JCole, Lil Wayne, M.I. Abaga, Drake, Kanye and the likes. Now, he is more influenced by South African rappers, namely Flvme, A-Reece, Zoocci Coke Dope, Nasty C. Their dedication to their craft is cited as the reason for this inspiration as he hopes to emulate the same effort to his fans.

Currently, 4Runna is working on his debut EP, titled ‘OACO3.’ The abbreviation stands for ‘On a Count of 3.” 4Runna states that it is a very personal one.
