Spotlight Monday: IjeKimora is taking Nigeria’s androcentric music industry by the horns with her debut ‘Sexy Papa’

After years of honing her craft abroad, Kimora is back in Nigeria and she’s on a mission to establish herself as the industry’s new diva. Her love for music is rooted hip-hop culture she grew up on during her days in North America and that upbringing is evident from a mile away. Her singing style is heavy with Western influence and she wears the armour of braggadocio often found on hip-hop artistes. But then she has the talent to back it up so why not?

“Sexy Papa” is the debut single with which she reboots her career with upon her return to her homeland. The track boasts of a catchy Afrohouse sound and the lyrics are highly charged with sexual energy. It’s a bold move to say the least, especially in a society that tries to police women from putting out such content. But Kimora has never been one to shy away from controversy so it’s safe to expect more acts of defiance of standards set for women as she attempts to shoot for the stars in her musical journey.

With an EP lined up for the second quarter of the year it will be interesting to observe the strides Kimora takes in the time building up to its release. A single or two? A music video perhaps? Whatever her next move might be, “Sexy Papa” was definitely a strong first move and we’re here for more.
