Spotlight Monday: Ayra Starr

49th

These days, to earn a record deal with a big label as Mavin you have to satisfy a simple but vital checklist: be young, be very talented and have a uniqueness to your musical style. Ayra Starr meets those requirements on all counts and it is for that reason that Don Jazzy unveiled her to the world on the 21st of January as the latest signee on the Mavins Records imprint.

Born Oyinkansola Aderibigbe and still only at the tender age of 18, the gifted Edo native boasts of a powerful and soulful voice that captures and commands the attention of listeners. Her talent came to the attention of Instagram users as far back as 2019 when she used to post covers of popular songs and freestyle verses of her own. Mavins subsequently reached out to her and they spent the better part of 2020 working hard in the studio, fine-tuning her sound and sharpening her artistry in preparation for her big unveiling.

The end result of all that hard work is the self-titled EP that dropped on the 22nd of January. The project has already generated very positive response from critics and listeners alike, with full credit going to Ayra Starr for her bold display of versatility, range and lyrics that showcase the world from the point of view of a curious teenager. Her massive rollout also featured a video to “Away”, with Ayra Starr playing heroine in the stunning and colourful visuals.

With a first project to her name, the world is now eagerly watching Ayra Starr to see what comes next. But with her supreme talent and the backing of the management team of Mavins on her side, it’s hard to see anything but a bright future in the crystal ball for her.
