Spotlight Monday: BABS

Babajide Salako, known on the music scene as BABS rapper and artiste on a mission to make an impact in the music industry. Who you are and where you grow up is said to greatly influence the music style and approach of any artiste and this holds very true for BABS. Having grown up alternating between the UK and Nigeria, the influences of the UK grime scene and Nigeria’s Afrobeats movement have shaped his sound into the interesting blend that it is right now.

While many of us are just getting familiar with him, it’s interesting to know that BABS had his first sniff of fame when he put out a cover of Davido’s “Dami Duro” in 2012. A 7-year hiatus followed after that before he returning with two singles, “Shaye” and “Rabata” in 2019. He continued in that stead in 2020 with the release of 2 more singles “Stuck In My Ways” and “Felt Like Jay Z?”. All his four singles have been met with good reception and received considerable airplay in the country and the UK, and the visuals to “Felt Like Jay Z?” already has over 12,000 views on YouTube.

A body of work seems like the logical next step and that is exactly what BABS has planned next. The project will be an EP titled “Babalawo Babs” and with acts like Oli Ekun, Buju and Barry Jhay expected to make appearances, it promises to be an exciting listening experience.
We’re hyped for BABS and you should be too.
