Spotlight Monday: DJ Woske

While many creatives can be said to be jack of many trades, very few put in the work to become masters in any of their fields of endeavour. That’s not the case for the enigmatic, industry ever-present DJ Woske though. He is a disc jockey, producer, musician, and visual artist, and he has made – and continues to make – impact in every area he touches.

His catalogue of work is impressive in all areas, but it is perhaps on the drumpads and turntables that DJ Woske’s skills are most evident. On the producer side of things, he has worked with many industry heavyweights, and he has been doing so for many years now. Remember “Toyin Tomato”, Falz’s 2014 hit? “Jo Funmi” by Ajebutter22 and Boj? Both sings were produced by the genius in question. His output as a producer obviously extends beyond the aforementioned tracks, and the likes of Odunsi, Lady Donli, and Boogey can testify to that. As an Afrobeats DJ with over 14 years of experience, he has created a number of popular mixes, his 2017 Maskoff Fuji Remix probably being the pick of the bunch.

As a recording artiste, he has bagged a few feature and backing vocals appearances to go with his handful of releases – “Woske Dance”, “Rude”, “Jeka Lo” – as a lead artiste. Creation of video animations and special effects is part of his skillset with the visualizer to Lady Donli’s track, “Ice Cream” being one of his best video creations. Even internet skits and podcasts are not spared in his quest to delve into as many areas of entertainment as possible.

After a brief absence, DJ Woske is now back with something new and different. He calls it “Afropella” and it combines vocal acapella mashup arrangements with visually stimulating videos. He has a visual EP of the same title lined up for release soon. “Jeka Lo” is the first of the 6 tracks set to be on “Afropella”. The video is out on YouTube and offers a lot of promise of what to expect from the full body of work when it’s out: clean, crisp acapella vocals that ensnare the ears and connect to the mind.
