Where is Kvng Vidarrr? That question probably crossed the minds of those familiar with the youngster’s deep baritone voice and effortless pen. It’s been three years and seventeen months since his last release, a 4-track EP titled “Vibes, Palm Trees & Chill.” The good news is that rather than a disappearance from the game, Kvng Vidarr’s absence is part of a master plan to come back better than ever.
Momoh Oshiotseameh Luke found the inspiration that led him down the path to becoming Kvng Vidarr from his grandmother. While living with her, Vidarr benefited from her diverse music taste, ranging from African legends like Yvonne Chaka, Oliver De Coque, and Onyeka Onwenu to American boy bands like Westlife and Backstreet Boys.
His early exposure to such a wide array of sounds during his formative years influenced Kvng Vidarr’s music. Across the five singles and single EP he has released, the artist has dabbled in a mix of different sounds, including Afrobeats, Afro-swing, Highlife, and Dancehall. The output has been largely palatable, with songs like “Awolowo,” “Blood,” and “Love” being the pick of the slim bunch.
However, for all his abilities to string beat flows and melodies together, Kvng Vidarr’s best quality is his songwriting. Vidarr has an excellent writing style that incorporates raw, emotive, and evocative lyricism to create relatable verses. He has built this skill since his teenage years and leveraged it to make good music, not just for himself but for other artists, too. In fact, he scored his biggest songwriting gigs this year, having assisted Joeboy for “Duffel Bag” and Laycon for “Marathon” and “Bioba” on their respective albums.
As for the answer to the question at the beginning of this piece, Kvng Vidarr has been working on taking his craft to the next level. He is currently participating in the Music Business Academy (MBA) program ’23 as one of the 10 next-gen African artists. As a beneficiary, Vidarrp would be further trained in songwriting, recording, and production. His selection is enough testament to his abilities, but what’s even more exciting is the prospect of the kind of artist he will become after the program. Could we be looking at the next superstar? Possibly. The good thing is we’re about to find out.
