Spotlight Monday: MUIS

In a world of contrasting opinions and differing views, humanity finds reasons now and then to be in agreement. “Saati Ramoni” is fast becoming one of those rare sources of unanimity for the music industry, with everyone from random listeners to music critics testifying to the quality of the record. With its infectious hook and prayerful message, the track similarly appeals to the trenches and elite and will blow up even more in the coming weeks. For Muis, the creator of this sensational new track, the stars are finally aligning, and he’s making his way up the steps to the level of success a man of his talents was always destined to reach.

Ajao Muis Oyindamola is very much a man of science as he is a man of the musical arts. Considering how actively he promotes his music at local shows and events, it might come as a surprise that he is also a final-year student of UNILAG’s College of Medicine. But then, his enthusiasm for showcasing his talents stretches as far back as the tender age of eleven, so not even the busy life of medical school would take that away from him. Muis spent three of his teenage years as the violinist for his school band, with which he successfully participated in a number of competitions. As time passed, he discovered he had an amazing singing voice and a wicked pen to match. Thus, the dream to pursue a music career was born.

That dream became a reality in 2018 when he started his career professionally. Then operating under the moniker King AMO, he released his debut track, “Vibe.” It became a local hit in and around UNILAG. Not much happened for the next three years, but his hard work in the shadows landed him a management deal with Chase Music. Muis made his debut with the label on their EP “The Chase,” where he contributed two tracks, “Pon My Mind” and the Jinmi Abduls-assisted record “Want You.” While the former earned praise from the hard-to-please Joey Akan, the latter appeared on top Audiomack playlists, validating the artist’s potential.

Muis cites superstars like Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy, Wande Coal, Usher, Chris Brown, and Styl Plus as his biggest influences. Characteristics of some of those stars are evident in his music. He embodies Wizkid’s simple and honest lyricism and Burna’s elegant flow and will often be heard hitting falsettos in classic Wande style. Muis brings these characteristics and his trademark boisterousness on every Afrofusion track he takes on. He is also very big on authenticity – a driving factor behind the switch from King AMO to his birthname – and only uses personal experiences to tell the stories in his songs. The result of putting together all these qualities is often a complete track that is relatable and abundant in replay value.

“Saati Ramoni,” his first single since re-emerging as Muis, is an embodiment of all that makes this artist worth listening to. On this ‘Afro-Adura’ record, Muis sends out a call to the heavens for blessings and protection. Is it the wealth of melodies, the brilliant vocal performance, or the relevance of the lyrics considering the dire nature of the Nigerian situation? The track comes with multiple attractions, and with the streaming numbers and social media feedback, the people are clearly buying what he’s selling. The word from his camp is that his debut EP is around the corner. If he can replicate the quality of his new single, then we could be in for something truly special. Stream “Saati Ramoni” today to understand why we think Muis is a superstar artiste in waiting.
