Quiries

SPOTLIGHT MONDAY: QUIRIES

Southern Nigeria has been a fertile land over the years, blessing the rest of the country with precious resources. But while crude oil was once the region’s biggest export, musical talents seem to have overtaken it in more recent times. Rivers state is leading the way, giving us the likes of Omah Lay and Burna Boy. But Bayelsa has something for us, too; the very same state from which Timaya sprung up to become a leading figure in the industry is brimming with more talented artists. And of the many fast-rising Afrobeats singers that can and will come out of the state, safe money is on Quiries to be the next one.

Born Quiren Doubara Dan Odoko, Quiries makes music that’s just as exotic as his first name. The singer and songwriter possesses a unique voice that he uses to tell personal stories. He’s an Afrofusion artist, predominantly blending our local Afrobeats with the western influence of R&B music. His boyish good looks have helped endear him to the Gen Z members who form his target audience. However, he substantiates the love his organic following has for him with a natural talent and a desire to grow his craft. Hence, it should come as no surprise that the young musician is bagging awards at the state level.

Quiries, with the proper management, is destined for the top. There is an abundance of evidence to support that assertion. He possesses the cadence of a foreign R&B artist – think Chris Brown – but maintains a songwriting style that hits close to home. Throw in the ability to induce goosebumps by hitting high notes. What you get is an artist that can truly deliver on every singer’s primary task; to entertain. His subject matter revolves around love, sex, and heartbreak, bringing a much-needed feel of relatability to his music. All of his good qualities are demonstrated on singles like “Kill,” “Moon Lover,” “Love is a Go,” and “Ogogoro.”

However, the truest exemplification of what makes Quiries special lies in his debut EP. The self-titled body of work consists of 4 tracks. But in the nine minutes over which the quartet of songs runs, we can easily see the star-quality Quiries packs. Guided by the brilliant production of DMP and Damiprobeats, the singer alternates between love – “One Kind” and “Chants” – and lust – “Come Over” and “Vibrate.” If vocal performance and lyrical competence are the most important things to you as a listener, Quiries brings that to the table. And if all you care about is replay value, you’re sure to be spinning this EP numerous times.

Rather than take our word for it, take the bold step and discover him yourself. Just search for this promising young artist’s profile on your preferred streaming platform and enjoy what he offers.
