Spotlight Monday: Soulaar

Tech bro and talented musician are not phrases often assigned to the same individual, but such is the case of Soulaar, Ejoya Music’s new wonderboy. The Lagos-based music company recently announced an artist development program as part of an expansion of their amazing services. To kick-start what promises to be an exciting program, they announced Soulaar as the first talent on the 28th of August. For music lovers and neutrals, the logical next question might be, “What’s so special about Soulaar?” Well, he’s special quite alright, and there are two major shreds of evidence in favour of that premise.

49th

Firstly, considering the high standard that Ejoya Music holds itself to, it makes sense to assume any artist emerging from their program will be of high quality. We got our first glimpse of that via a 59-second clip uploaded on the brand’s social media page. It showed Soulaar, dreads packed in two buns and glasses shimmering in the studio lights, confidently introducing himself to the world with a hook and verse. And what an introduction it was too. On the chorus, he asserted that he “hits harder than Rambo,” and that doesn’t seem to be an exaggeration, all things considered. The delivery was smooth, the melodies were tight, and although it feels weird to say about a short clip, it packed high replay value.

Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, his debut single is out on all platforms. If the aforementioned clip was pregnant with promise, we witnessed a successful delivery of that promise on the 31st of August. “Bam Bam” is the title of Soulaar’s first official offering, distributed under exclusive license to Ejoya, of course. The track is an uptempo Afrofusion work of art that brings all the same exciting qualities that made the clip discussed earlier: smooth delivery, rich melodies, and a high replay value. He expanded on that by displaying a smart use of words in the song’s lyrics. He captured the essence of the skewed nature of conditional love that dominates society today without being fake deep about it. By assuming the position of a man caught between the roles of loverboy and playboy, he has created something many men can relate to while catching the bug of its infectious tunes.

According to the presser put out by Ejoya, Solafunmi Yemi Olowolabi, as he was known before his rebirth as Soulaar, has a background in tech. But rest assured that this is no average individual looking to make the crossover into music, having made some money from another endeavour. What we have before us is a seriously talented individual with a high potential to create timeless music. To closely paraphrase his words, “this is Soulaar season and you will feel the shockwave!” The logical next question now is, “are you ready?” Go to your preferred streaming platform and give “Bam Bam” a spin today to prepare yourself for the newest artist on the block.
