Spotlight Monday: Timi Jay

Evolution is both a skill and a basic survival instinct. The ability to evolve with the times and reinvent yourself to replicate previous successes or reach new achievements is important in all spheres of life, and maybe more so in music than any other endeavour. That, in many ways, summarises the story of Timi Jay. Yes, the same Timi Jay whose tag you’ve heard at the end of so many of the tail end of so many hit songs since 2019.

Only at the age of 22 years, Timilehin Joseph Jolaoso, the name from which the moniker Timi Jay was coined, has lived 3 different lives in the music industry already. Contrary to what you might think, his reincarnations were not born from failing at the previous endeavour, but from a pure desire to do and be more. He started off as a Disc Jockey, lighting up several school parties with these skills on the turntables while navigating through his secondary school education at Ezekiel International College. His quest to explore a different facet of his passion for music led him to the world of music production in 2017 where he equally excelled, making stellar beats across different genres for many upcoming acts. That wasn’t enough for the Timi Jay, so deeper he went. And it was unarguably on the quest to mastering the intricacies of sound engineering that he really struck gold.

His top-of-the-line mixing and mastering effort of Buju and Zlatan’s banger “Spiritual” was the track that turned heads of industry figures in his direction. His contribution was sought after heavily after that and as he delivered time after time, his profile inevitably rose rapidly. Olakira, Zinoleesky, Buju (again), and BadBoyTimz are artists who have Timi Jay to thank for turning their raw recordings on “Maserati”, “Ma Pariwo”, “L’enu remix”, and “MJ” respectively into crisp, clear sounds that made it easy for the listeners to appreciate. And the listed tracks are just to mention a few because we have heard the tag “Timi Jay on the track” at the end of more hits than we can begin listing in one article.

As the veil begins to lift farther away from the eyes of many, sound engineers are now getting their due credit for the irreplaceable role they play making a sound palatable to the ears. Timi Jay – and rightfully so – is getting his fair share of the accolades going round. He has age and the potential for longevity on his side, so do not be surprised when he takes his already world-class mixing and mastering skills to the international stage. He still remains a beatmaker as well, so there’s that going for him too. The options are open to him and so are the many windows of opportunity we are sure to see him climbing through in the coming years.

The Architect of the New Wave: Kblacktheblack’s Rise and Sonic Evolution In the rapidly expanding universe of Nigerian music, Iborn Ogbuluijah Kenneth Nsan is carving out a distinct lane for himself. Known professionally as Kblacktheblack—or simply SBB to his growing fanbase—he represents the new vanguard of hip-hop artists who are reshaping the sonic landscape of the continent. He is not merely a rapper; he is a curator of culture, blending the rhythmic heartbeat of his city with a contemporary vision that aims to influence African pop culture through music, fashion, and creative direction. His goal is ambitious yet clear: to leave a lasting impact on the cultural landscape and shape the narrative for the next generation of creatives. At the core of Kblacktheblack’s artistry lies a firm commitment to three values: respect, authenticity, and creativity. His discography, which already boasts two EPs and a slew of charting singles, serves as a mirror to society. He specializes in weaving infectious rhythms with lyrics that cut deep into personal experiences and the daily societal bustle. This dedication to his craft has earned him recognition on DSP charts and placements on international editorial playlists, proving that his sound resonates far beyond his immediate community. What truly sets him apart, however, is the holistic "SBB experience." He is celebrated for an electrifying stage presence that transforms every performance into a memorable event, coupled with a penchant for out-of-the-box lyricism and innovative production that consistently defies standard genre constraints. This versatility is currently on full display through his two latest releases, which highlight the duality of his sound. His newest anthem, "Hustler," featuring Hollerdotun, captures the gritty essence of ambition. The track serves as a soundtrack for the relentless go-getters, a theme visually underscored by its striking cover art featuring a stack of cash balanced precariously on the head—a metaphor for the heavy lifting required in the pursuit of success. It is a raw, energetic offering that speaks directly to the reality of the street hustle and the determination required to thrive. On the other end of the spectrum is the double-release "Impatient/Garage Refix," which dropped on November 20th. Including the tracks "Impatient" and "Impatient II," this project showcases a more introspective and experimental side of the artist. The visual direction suggests a moody, emotive narrative, while the "Garage Refix" inclusion hints at a fusion of his signature flow with fast-paced, electronic-influenced percussion. By seamlessly navigating between the hard-hitting bars of "Hustler" and the experimental textures of "Impatient," Kblacktheblack proves he is a musical shapeshifter, positioning himself as a pivotal figure who is not just participating in the culture, but actively defining its future.
