The 49th Guide To: Reasons why you should be watching AFCON

AFCON kick-started a new tournament a few days ago and it’s been a beautiful ride through. From the high expectations to the banters and the sheer love of football, it would be a shame if you’ve not seen any match so far. If you’ve not started following the matches, here’s why you should jump on the train now:

For the love of football

Football has the singular power of bringing people together in support of a team. It’s almost surreal when you see thousands of people glued to their screens and filling up stadiums; the resounding thunder of Goallll and the alternating moments of disappointments as well as the rising hope you see on the faces of diehard fans. You shouldn’t be missing out on this experience.

For the love of the country

Watching your home country become a beast on the field is the top 3 best feelings in the world and it’s not number 3. Nothing beats the energy surge that pumps through you as you watch your flag gets raised high and your fellow supporters roar in victory. You’d even forget that you can’t afford cooking gas anymore or your economy wants to send you back to the village. In that moment, the only thing that matters is being proud of your nation.

For the beauty on screen

This category is for the women that have no interest in watching football until the handsome lads show up on the screen. Now, you’d find them asking their male friends what time the next match is. It’s not the football, it’s the skin and muscles on screen that is entertaining them. Who cares about ball possession and other statistics when you can just drool over your screen? All form of support is still support and our team needs all the love we can get.

For the love of banter

This is the most interesting part of following AFCON. All African countries that qualified for the tournament have different levels of diss towards one other and having to play matches against one another just brings the whole energy out. It’s most fun to watch between Nigerians and Ghanaians. Anyone that misyarns will get cooked like lamb chops on an open fire grill, with resounding laughter ringing out across the continent.

No better time to bond with older people

The older generation never stops talking about Amokachi and JJ Okocha when national football talks come up. You’d be surprised by how much your father knows about football until you all sit down before the TV and he gives a rundown of what happened in 1994. Football brings the family together and you shouldn’t miss this opportunity to follow the 2022 AFCON tournament in Cameroon with your best people.
