While we’re still in the spirit of upholding customary practices, it would be a disservice not to talk about some things you shouldn’t be doing if you listen to music from our own indigenous artistes.

This year is dedicated to supporting our own and here are a few things you shouldn’t be caught up in:

Downloading illegal music

There’s no way you can claim to be one of the good ones when you get your music from all manners of poor websites. Asides from not helping your fave to top those charts, you’re definitely not looking at a heavenly race for yourself. Support new artistes by streaming their music and curate more playlists on music platforms to include their music.

Unnecessary online wars

Having access to the internet doesn’t translate to being a silly person, and a good number of you really need to do better. Sometimes, resist the urge to compare two upcoming artistes and generate hate for the less popular person.
Online wars have real-life implications and music is meant to bring people together, not cause fights, so don’t be the outlier.

Stop being a pest to your fave

Try not to be that pesky person that goes under all the posts of an artiste to throw shade and demand a new album. Creating art through music is hard work and you can be rest assured that no artiste wants to make bad music, but when you bring on your pressure, it can be really counterproductive for the quality you want.

Respect yourself; don’t stay out late for concerts.

It’s not a bad thing to want to watch an artist perform live, especially when you’ve spent all year streaming their music, but it’s not all that smart to put yourself at risk when the organizers of a concert don’t respect your time. It’s ridiculous to stay up late in a city that isn’t safe and still be stranded because the artiste didn’t show up. Whatever you do, think about your safety first. You don’t want to spend all night there and keep shouting yeah yeah, without enjoying any music.

No ugly tattoos, please

There’s a group of people that believe that the only way they can prove their love to their favourite artiste is by making a huge painting of the artiste’s face on their body. Worst still, they never get it right and it appears as though they’ve mutilated themselves. If you’re in this category, or you intend to join this group, now is the time to push the reset button in your mind and quit. Don’t do it, it’s a bad idea.
