The Adroit Lyricist

Chisom Okoro, popularly known as Aizay, is a hip-hop and rap artist from Lagos, Nigeria. Aizay sticks to these genres, although he occasionally enjoys experimenting with new sounds. Often found flowing on distinctive beats, he adapts himself to the rhythm of whatever beat is given to him. Switching his flow to sit perfectly on any track.

Aizay grew up in a large household in Ikorodu, Lagos. In a household consisting of his parents, 4 siblings, and a few extended family members. The bustling environment of his upbringing might account for his introverted nature. He describes himself as someone others see as quiet, which he agrees with. As a kid, he remembers the urge to make music but never got the chance to.

Moreover, he attributes that to his strict upbringing. He was restricted from doing most of the things his peers could. Even with these obstacles, he would write raps and lyrics whenever he could. He has always been a creative person; with an interest in art and anything creative. This fixation on creation stems from a deep fascination with seeing imaginations brought to life. Exciting is one word he used to describe the feeling it gives him.

Therefore, when he got into university, he saw it as an opportunity to actualize his urges. Ultimately away from his family and their reservations. He was free to be himself and explore his creative side extensively. This allowed for his relationship with music to deepen. Now he cites music as all that he is, his food, his oxygen. He will never stop making it till he’s gone. It serves as a mechanism to express himself and ease his thoughts.

Regarding his creative process, he enjoys solitude in his room while recording. Sinking into himself and his subconscious to express himself on the microphone. He describes it as locking down, getting down to it. He outsources his beats, recording whatever he is feeling at the moment.

Within his music, he preaches love. Teaching and telling others to embrace their youth, while going for what is theirs. His number one message is to not take life too seriously, just live. Life is too short. Be diligent in your craft and be your true self. Do not let others dictate how you live.

Furthermore, Aizay is inspired by a few people; Kendrick Lamar, Future, Young Thug and Lil Wayne. He references others as the true life heroes that influenced his sound; as he grew up listening to them. People like Wizkid and Davido. Additionally, nasty c is someone else he’s inspired by. Citing how young he is and making his dreams come true, especially in his home continent where his style of music isn’t mainstream.

Aizay looks up to these people, while believing he can surpass them. He is currently working on his project, “Level Ten.” It is set for release towards the end of the year. If you are looking forward to more from Aizay or want to keep up with his journey, his Instagram is @up4zay.
