Alina Abdullahi is the person behind the stage name, LunaLovesYou. Luna creates Alternative RnB while utilizing components from other genres and styles. Primarily Neo Soul. Therefore, their sound is a sweet blend of both. Lunas’ music can be described as warm, rhythmic and grandiose.
Luna currently lives and works in the UK, where they attended university. Their pronouns are she/they. Growing up in Lagos, art and its various components were always a part of their life. Luna started learning to play the piano at age 3, which helped cement their lifelong love for music. They were constantly listening to music or singing because it helped them feel good anytime they felt down.
This deep passion for music and its ability to lift their spirits plays a big part in why they started making music. For Luna, the sense of escape they experience while creating their music is a haven for them. From songwriting to sound engineering and making the finishing touches. Music constantly comes through for them.
Furthermore, Luna enjoys film and creative direction. They direct every project they have put out, from their music videos and photoshoots, to their branding. In their spare time, they do graphic and concept design. Aside from their artistic pursuits, Luna likes skateboarding and being spiritually in tune. They enjoy listening to various types of music, taking inspiration from them for their creative process when making music.
Speaking of their creation process, Luna describes it as being ‘highly amusing.’ The time they spend in the studio is often filled with jokes and laughter between them and their producer. Their congenial relationship has created an atmosphere where they can explore and meander into new or uncanny aspects of music. Additionally, Luna receives inspiration randomly throughout their week. They save these tiny glimpses of thoughts, hums, tunes or lyrics using voice notes. Then, they’ll play it to their producer, who completely grasps what they were hinting at, and begin putting together music from there.
Recently, they’ve been going to the studio with nothing written down, creating the lyrics as they start recording. In this same fashion, the beats are also made from scratch while they’re present. Giving them a chance to insert creative input and direction. They describe this process as smooth, thankful that they switched things up.
Luna’s music is clearly pivotal and natural to them. They enjoy being fully immersed in it and could not dream of their life without it. Moreover, they describe it as their everything. All their moments living, breathing, and experiencing; they listen to music. Overall, they use their music to make people feel less alone, while the rest of the messages in their music are up to the interpretation of whoever is receiving it.
“Whatever the song evokes is the message im trying to send.”
I hope you’ve enjoyed getting to know Luna as much as I did. For those who’d like to hear more from them, they are working on a project set to drop next year. However, the first single of the project might drop sometime in January. Pay attention to their Instagram @lunalovesulani.
