The Super Falcons of Nigeria clinched a remarkable victory over fierce rivals Banyana Banyana of South Africa with a dramatic stoppage-time winner in their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Semi-Final fixture at the Stade Larbi Zaouli to advance to the final of the continental tournament.
The Nigerians were eager to defeat their opponents and claim another famous victory to underline their dominance as they go in search of a record-extending 10th continental title.
The Super Falcons dominated the first half and were the superior side, but could not find the opener until the opening half drew to a close. The Nigerian team was awarded a penalty after Bambanani Mbane was adjudged to have handled the ball in the South African box, and Captain Rasheedat Ajibade was handed spotkick duties. With the fate of an entire nation resting on her shoulders, she delivered brilliantly, burying the penalty into the back of the net. Her first goal at WAFCON’25 came as they took the lead into the break.

Unwilling to back down without a fight, Banyana Banyana upped the tempo of their performance after the restart. Their doggedness paid off as they were awarded a penalty after Osinachi Ohale brought down Hildah Magaia in Nigeria’s 18-yard box. Linda Motlhalo buried it emphatically, sending Chiamaka Nnadozie the wrong way. It was the first goal that Nigeria had conceded at this year’s tournament.
With the game up for grabs, both teams threw everything they had into the match, making a flurry of substitutions. The Super Falcons’ persistence was rewarded as Michelle Alozie notched a sensational winner via an unbelievable effort in the 94th minute. Her cross cum shot from about 35th yards out evaded everyone in the box and bounced into the back of the net, sending the players and fans alike into raptures. Banyana Banyana keeper Andile Dlamini was left helplessly stunned by Alozie’s effort as the goal brought delight, ecstasy, and relief for all Nigerians globally.

The Super Falcons continue their unbeaten run in the tournament. Mission X remains on track, and South Africa will aim to regroup ahead of their third-place playoff match. They will face hosts Morocco, who edged Ghana in their semi-final tie on penalties, in the final on Saturday, and they’ll fancy their chances of bringing a record continental crown back home.
