Among the list of fast-rising artists in Nigeria, Taves stands out as a talented singer-songwriter who delivers a fresh new sound and captivating melodies that sticks in the minds of listeners like strawberry bubblegum.
Born Toluwanimi Aluko and representing the city of Ibadan, he has harbored a strong love for music right from a young age. He began writing melodies that resonated through his heart and picked up the guitar, influenced by the Asa songs he heard during family car trips. With love for various music genres like Rock and Disco, the R&B genre particularly resonated with him more, which can be seen all over his discography.
From drawing inspiration from Asa’s music to being inspired by Khalid’s ‘American Teen,’ he was motivated to start recording songs in secondary school with his friends. After receiving positive reception and feedback, he decided to pursue music seriously. Fast forward to 2021, Taves released his first single, titled ‘Betterment,’ which served as his first introduction to the music world publicly. He also released an EP called ’18’ in the same year, consisting of four love-themed songs mixed with guitar, melodies and emotions.
In 2022 His cover for BNXN’s “For Days” exposed him and his talent. This exposure was pivotal, as it showcased his unique style and vocal prowess, earning him a spot in the limelight.
His breakout single, ‘Eleyele,’ released in mid-2023, gained him recognition and introduced him to a wider audience. He was also signed to Atlantic Records in late 2023. This led up to his 2024 hit single pack, which consists of two songs. The first provides a glimpse into the fun-filled life of people living in Bodija, Ibadan. The second track, titled ‘Folake,’ features an ’80s slow funk beat with a lovesick melody about a love interest.
As Taves continues to tell stories through melodies and lyrics that resonate with a generation, he stands as a testament to the power of music transcending boundaries and connecting hearts. The future holds no bounds for him, as his music promises to be a soundtrack to the lives of many, inspiring and moving listeners with every note.
